This week on Extra Serving, a Nation’s Restaurant News podcast, NRN editors Holly Petre, Sam Oches, and Leigh Anne Zinsmeister discussed the new CEO at Starbucks.

 

After much speculation, Starbucks’ interim CEO Howard Schultz named a successor in Laxman Narasimhan, a former PepsiCo executive who most recently served as CEO of consumer health and wellness brand Reckitt. The team discussed what the timing of this appointment means as well as their own predictions for what this could hold for the future of Starbucks which has faced its own series of challenges of late including the wave of unionization.

 

Also, the team discussed California’s new fast-food workers’ bill. The bill, which was signed into law on Labor Day by Governor Gavin Newsom, will create standardized practices for restaurants with over 100 units nationally. It has been met with pushback from organizations like the National Restaurant Association. The team discussed what this bill’s passage could mean and how a bipartisan council could possibly work when it comes to foodservice and worker rights.

Boston's Pizza president on facing challenges as a casual-dining pizza chain during a pandemic

Over the past couple of months during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, while many pizza chains were seeing the benefit of their delivery-focused business, Boston Pizza — the Canada-based pizzeria/sports restaurant with 21 locations in 15 states across the U.S. — struggled and had to close nearly half of their locations. “We have gourmet pizza and it’s not the most inexpensive pizza, so we’re faring more like typical casual dining restaurant than some of the pizza delivery companies that have been wining in this situation,” Boston Pizza president Jeff Melnick said. For the Boston Pizza restaurants that stayed open, the company implemented operational changes across their franchise system in order to transition to a temporary off-premise business model, from scaling down their 80-item menu for delivery to customizing “touchless labels” to ensure customers that their food had been sealed. But, as Melnick said, as many states are now allowing restaurants to reopen their dining rooms, Boston Pizza is undergoing the process of recovery and slowly opening up their restaurants again. Currently, six Boston Pizza restaurants are available for dine-in and in the weeks that they have been open have seen 75% of their usual sales. “We’re still seeing positive sales trends,” Melnick said. “ [This is] going to be a challenge but that will be short lived.” Listen to his story in this week’s episode of our Extra Serving podcast. ...

NRN editors discuss inflation, Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson’s pay raise and restaurant industry financials

This week on Extra Serving, podcast by Nation’s Restaurant News’ Last Bite Network, NRN editors Holly Petre, Sam Oches and Leigh Anne Zinsmeister spoke about Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson’s pay raise despite inflation and the recent labor woes. The team discussed the reports that Johnson received close to a 40% pay bump (including a non-equity incentive plan, stock awards, and a 4.5% bump to his base salary). The CEO of quick-service chain Starbucks made waves when the report was shared amid the unionization efforts among over 50 Starbucks stores across the country.  Also this week, Starbucks reported its Q1 earnings and the team was happy to discuss that the restaurant industry appears to be on some solid footing for the first time in a while and, while life isn’t back to normal, the team was glad to see that earnings appear to be showing that the industry is inching back to normal. Finally, the team discussed the recent report from the National Restaurant Association stating that the industry is expected to hit $898 billion this year. While that number is impacted by inflation, it is back to pre-pandemic numbers which, for an industry that lost $250 billion during the pandemic, is a welcome change.
