Nick Graff of Noodles & Company on the chain's foray into stuffed noodles

This week on the Extra Serving podcast, NRN editors Holly Petre, Sam Oches and Leigh Anne Zinsmeister spoke about the year in review. For the last podcast of the year, the team discussed the biggest stories of the year including all 25 mergers and acquisitions and seven IPO drafts. While it wasn’t a record for M&A (2019 saw 34 mergers and acquisitions), it was an epic second half of the year that got everyone talking, including these NRN editors. The team also discussed their 2022 predictions and trends, as well as the trends we may have gotten wrong for 2021. Casual dining has had a resurgence, something no one saw coming. But virtual brands are here to stay, something everyone predicted. We also provide an early peak at our 2022 trends package, set to drop online next week. Finally, this week’s podcast features an interview with Nick Graff, senior vice president of culinary for Noodles and Company who speaks with Bret Thorn about the chain’s foray into stuffed pasta and R&D for the fast-casual brand. ...

Earlier this week, quick-service chain Jack in the Box acquired the quick-service Mexican chain Del Taco. Check out what the team thinks of this move and what it could mean for the market. Will we see Jack in the Box go on to purchase another brand?  Also, the NRN editors discussed the recent news that New York City would require vaccinations for employees of private businesses. What does it mean for companies that have already had to face so much these past few years? The team discussed the implications of this for the restaurant industry. Plus, the team spoke about Christmas in New York and gave some recommendations. This week’s guest is Victor Cruz, former football star who has recently partnered with Krystal to become a restaurant franchisee.  If you have a restaurant that’s decorated for the holidays, send me an e-mail at [email protected], it may make it on the website. ...

NRN editors discuss restaurant unions, the Boston Market walkout, celebrity endorsements and the sale of Velvet Taco

This week on the Extra Serving podcast, Holly Petre, Sam Oches and Bret Thorn discussed the re-emergence of unions in the restaurant industry. The latest news comes from Tudors Biscuit World, a W. Va.-based chain where workers in one unit claimed managers called the police when they attempted to call a meeting to discuss majority union support. And the Starbucks unionization attempts at several upstate New York locations have seen increased tensions between the unions and the chain ahead of next week’s vote. Also, the team talked about the Thanksgiving Boston Market walkout and what it means for the restaurant industry. Is this a symptom of the labor situation across restaurants, and do other chains need to pay attention? Will this bring about better working conditions? Find out what the NRN editors think in the episode. Finally, the NRN editors discussed the sale of Velvet Taco. The fast-casual taco chain was sold earlier this week, but the team was more interested in talking about what a cool brand Velvet Taco is and the growing chain’s potential. That lead to a conversation about celebrity endorsements in the restaurant industry related to Velvet Taco’s marketing. Also in this episode, hear an interview with the dietician and executive chef of Woworks, Katie Cavuto, where she talks about the benefits of exhaling. Also, here’s a link to Bret’s “meat sweats” mentioned in the podcast if you want to experience it firsthand. ...

This week on the Extra Serving podcast, NRN editors Holly Petre, Sam Oches and Joanna Fantozzi discussed the planned acquisition of Firehouse Subs by Restaurant Brands International. CEO of First Watch Chris Tomasso on the brand’s first public earnings

This week, the NRN editors discussed the latest collaboration between McDonald’s and a celebrity: Mariah Carey. The Queen of Christmas partnered with the quick-service giant for a set of deals leading up to Christmas. This collaboration differs from most of the brand’s celebrity collaborations as there is no special meal or merchandise, just discounts on items already on the menu. Also, the editors discussed whether In-N-Out will go to Florida. The editors came to an early consensus, but the deeper issue is what this call between Gov. DeSantis and Lysni Synder will do for the brand’s reputation. What does it mean that In-N-Out appears to be more public than ever about this controversial issue? The editors discuss it all. Finally, the team talks about the big news this week which was that Danny Meyer’s SPAC is investing in Panera Brands and helping it go public. For the guest this week, Ron Ruggless spoke with the CEO of First Watch Chris Tomasso about the brand’s first public earnings. ...
